Why Cook Islands

Polynesia, before the resorts got tall

The Cook Islands are what the South Pacific felt like before it got famous. No building on Rarotonga stands taller than a coconut palm, by law, and the whole island runs on two buses labelled simply clockwise and anticlockwise. The lagoon at Aitutaki is the star turn, and it earns every superlative: a vast triangle of impossibly graded blues scattered with deserted motu, where lagoon cruises drop you on sandbars for barbecued fish and snorkelling that feels like swimming in light. Back on Rarotonga, Sunday church singing lifts the roof, night markets serve ika mata raw fish in coconut cream, and cross-island tracks climb through jungle to needle peaks. Everyone waves. Nobody hurries. The Cooks are barefoot, big-hearted and blissfully unbothered by the century outside the reef.
